Arriving Safe on Summer Road Trips

Summer is a time when vacations are popular and the weather makes it easy to enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hiking or enjoying the beach. These activities put many folks on our roadways, whether biking, walking or driving to these destinations. Unfortunately, the risk of accidents can be high, especially when there are so many people sharing the roadways.

It’s important to maintain the carefree feeling that summer brings, but to do that may mean taking extra care to prevent accidents that can lead to personal injury lawsuits.

According to MADD, in recent years, 38% of all traffic deaths were DUI influenced. If the number of deaths is this high, just think of how many accidents occurred where there were injuries only. Driving while under the influence causes accidents, plain and simple. If you are the driver of the vehicle, choose not to drink or be conscious about how much time you have before driving when you chose to have a drink because even a few drinks leads to impairment. Although alcohol effects people differently, in most cases, impairment can begin after having just one drink equal to 1.5 oz. of 80 proof liquor, 12 oz. of regular beer, or 5 oz. of table wine. The blood alcohol limit for the state of RI is .08 for adults 21 and over.

It’s important to remember that using a cell phone while driving delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. In addition, RI State Police say that drivers who use handheld devices are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to cause injury.

Summer is a time to enjoy the beauty that Rhode Island has to offer, and comes with many opportunities to spend time with friends and family. Keep your family free from personal injury this vacation season by making good choices about alcohol and device use while driving.
